Eisenhower, General of the US Army. It traces Eisenhower's military career from West Point till 1945 - does not cover his service as president of the United States. Dwight David "Ike" Eisenhower (October 14, 1890 - March 28, 1969) was a five-star general in the United States Army and served as Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe from 1943 till 1945. He was responsible for planning and supervising the invasion of North Africa in Operation Torch in 1942 - 43 and the successful invasion of France and Germany in 1944 - 45. On January 20, 1953 he became the 34th President of the United States. About the grade of General of the Army: General of the Army is a five-star general officer and the highest possible rank in the United States Army. A General of the Army ranks immediately above a general and is equivalent to a fleet admiral and a General of the Air Force. There is no established equivalent five-star rank in the other federal uniformed services. Often called a "five-star general", the rank of General of the Army has historically been reserved for wartime use and is not currently active in the U.S. military. A special rank of General of the Armies, which ranks above General of the Army, exists but has been conferred only twice, to General John J. Pershing and posthumously to George Washington. Dwight D. This historic, silent newsreel was made for the home market (a sound version would have been shown in theaters) shows the victory tour of Allied Supreme Commander Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower in the aftermath of V-E Day, May 8, 1945. Ike made a series of triumphant visits to London (57 seconds), Paris (1:50), Washington, D.C.(2:27) where he was re-united with his wife Mamie, New York (4:00) including Yankee Stadium (6:27), West Point (6:50), Kansas City (7:44) and finally (8:58) on June 22, 1945 Eisenhower returned to his hometown of Abilene, Kansas. The parade included members of the 1909 local high school football team (9:27) which Ike had served as running back. Eisenhower did not have much time to dilly-dally in the USA, as in November 1945, Eisenhower returned to Washington to replace Marshall as Chief of Staff of the Army. His main role at that time was rapid demobilization of millions of soldiers in the European Theater and later in Asia and around the world. You can read an article about Eisenhower's return to Abilene here:http://www.oldmagazinearticles.com/Abilene_Kansas_Welcomed_General_Dwight_Eisenhower#.WHxrtrYrKV4 We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! From "Dieppe", a CBC miniseries directed by John N. Smith, copyright Canadian Broadcasting Corporation 1993 (excerpted for fair use only) In August 1942, a force of 5000 Canadians, along with some British and US troops, launched a night-time raid at the German-occupied port of Dieppe in France. The raid was a total disaster, with almost 60% of the attackers killed, wounded or captured. The Dieppe fiasco was used to argue against an Anglo-American landing in Europe until 1944, letting the Soviet Union bear the brunt of the fighting against Nazi Germany. At this time, the Royal Yugoslav Army was fighting in the Balkans, fulfilling British pleas to sabotage German supplies to North Africa, even as Germans executed tens of thousands of civilians in reprisal. By 1943, when they were no longer of use to London, the Yugoslavs were betrayed by the same British that Eisenhower accused of cowardliness, for "not killing enough Germans", and abandoned in favor of the pro-British Communist movement of Tito.

This order was issued by Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower to encourage Allied soldiers taking part in the D-day invasion of June 6, 1944. Almost immediately after France fell to the Nazis in 1940, the Allies planned a cross-Channel assault on the German occupying forces, ultimately code-named Operation Overlord. By May 1944, 2,876,000 Allied troops were amassed in southern England. The largest armada in history, made up of more than 4,000 American, British, and Canadian ships, lay in wait, and more that 1,200 planes stood ready. Against a tense backdrop of uncertain weather forecasts, disagreements in strategy, and related timing dilemmas, Eisenhower decided before dawn on June 5 to proceed with Overlord. Later that same afternoon, he scribbled a note intended for release, accepting responsibility for the decision to launch the invasion and full blame should the effort to create a beachhead on the Normandy coast fail. Much more polished is his printed Order of the Day for June 6, 1944, which Eisenhower began drafting in February. The order was distributed to the 175,000-member expeditionary force on the eve of the invasion. Explore more at: D-Day: June 6, 1944 http://www.army.mil/d-day/
